Spring is on its way! Here are several tips to keep your home in good condition as the warmer weather approaches.
1. Check that water is properly draining away from your home.
Watch for proper drainage as snow melts and rain collects during the Spring season. Be sure that gutters and downspouts are draining correctly and that no blockages are preventing proper flow of water.
2. Use caution if replacing window screens.
Some homeowners choose to remove window screens for winter to allow more light into their home. Use care when re-installing in the Spring, as screens perforate easily and the frames bend if not handled with care.
3. Clean your furnace filter & HRV/ERV filter.
Remember to change or clean the filter monthly. Although it takes less than one minute to change the filter, this is one of the most frequently overlooked details of normal furnace & HRV care. Buy filters in large quantities for the sake of convenience.
4. Inspect basement and/or crawl spaces.
It is recommended to check your home’s lower level for any leaking due to snow melt or rainfall. You should also inspect your water heater for any potential leaks.
5. Check roof for loose or cracked shingles.
Snow and ice can cause damage to your roof over the Winter. It is recommended to have a professional inspect your roof for any loose or cracked shingles.
6. Check driveways & walkways for frost damage.
Frost can cause shifting of ground surfaces such as asphalt and concrete. Visually inspect them for cracking or warping and schedule maintenance if necessary.
